Vietnam and Italy signed an Agreement for facilitating Italian Direct Investment to Vietnam

The agreement aims at facilitating co-operation between Italian and Vietnamese enterprises for investment and know-how transfer to Vietnam.

Nguyen Xuan Trung - Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Investment of the Ministry of Planning and Investment of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - and Mr Ruggero Manciati - Chairman of SIMEST S.p.A., a semi-public company partially owned by the Italian Government - signed in Rome, on November 29, 2002, an Agreement for mutual support in order to promote capital investment flow from Italy to Vietnam.

MPI and SIMEST committed themselves to share information and expertise in investment related activities in order to facilitate and contribute to the effective implementation of the investment projects between Italian companies and Vietnamese counterparts.

Capital flow is fundamental to support the performances and the high growth rate of the Vietnamese economy. The sectors in which Italy may invest capital in Vietnam are the ones of machinery, metal industry, banking, insurance, food processing, paper and printing, IT and telecommunication and tourism.

The main objective of the Agreement is to promote co-operation between Italian and Vietnamese enterprises. Efforts will be made from both sides to provide partner search and selection services, consulting services such as investment strategy, market entry strategy, negotiating support, as well as seminars, business missions and public relations. SIMEST and MPI agreed to provide each other, within their capability, information on economic and social environment such as investment incentives, regulatory framework, customs and taxation, market data and specific sectorial industry information.

This new agreement, that supports the previous Inter-governmental Italian-Vietnam 1996 Investment Treaty, will facilitate technology and know-how transfer from Italy to Vietnam, boosting the flow of Italian capital and the economic relations between the two Countries: “I am extremely pleased with the signature of this Agreement”, said Luigi Solari, Ambassador of Italy in Vietnam, “especially because it occurs shortly before the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and Vietnam”.
